BOULDER, CO (CN) – The Union Cycliste International, which governs cycling, has decided to take a stand on athletes using sunscreens that contain high levels of SPF at this year’s Tour de France event. According to the UCI, rumors have been heard of teams using sunscreen with SPF ratings well above 50 and approaching 100. One UCI official was quoted as saying, “We feel any sunscreen with an SPF rating above 30 may offer a competitive advantage. We are not sure of this yet and will continue our investigation and currently have little data to back up this assumption up. But, we feel we need to act now to protect the integrity of competitive cycling.” No word on how the UCI will test and enforce this new rule but we are sure they have a plan. They always have a plan. A source close to the story said, “Any rider who smells of coconuts will be added to the ‘SPF list’ as a suspicious persons and subject to further scrutiny.”

Can’t attest to the validity of SPF 50+ sunscreens offering a competitive advantage but they should certainly think twice about applying the amount of chemical actives needed to boost the SPF to that level to their bodies. In addition, SPF 50 does NOT offer twice the protection of SPF 25, it offers less than 1% additional protection, hardly worth the concentrated chemicals or the cost.
